Many of us identify a fire hydrant as a source of pure water for emergencies. But we have no idea whether that water is pure—or polluted. We take it for granted, that those overseeing the water supply to that fire hydrant are doing the right thing. Today, we often look at the Internet as that fire hydrant source of accurate information. Unfortunately—far too often—we must wade through a plethora of sludge before finding truth. To illustrate, I asked “ChatGPT” to write a paragraph on fire hydrant mentality with biblical scriptures and here is what it said:

“The ‘fire hydrant mentality’ refers to the readiness and preparedness to respond swiftly to challenges and opportunities in life. In a biblical context, this mentality can be likened to the biblical principles of vigilance and preparedness. Proverbs 6:6-8 encourages diligence by observing the ways of the ant, which prepares in advance for the future. Additionally, Matthew 25:1-13 teaches about the importance of being prepared, like the wise virgins who had enough oil for their lamps. Embracing a fire hydrant mentality aligns with biblical teachings that highlight the significance of being proactive, ready for whatever may come, and exemplifying qualities of diligence and preparedness in the journey of life.” – from ChatGPT Artificial Intelligence technology.

Not bad, but that’s not what I mean. We all see the fire hydrant as a “good” source of water. So too, many of us innocently see all our social media, news feeds, or artificial intelligence as “good” sources of information and comfort. The truth is that there are a lot of half-truths, biased stories, and flat out lies behind the Internet and media hydrants. Thankfully, the truths of scripture have faced the test of time again and again; and proven themselves reliable. So, the next time you’re looking for truth, check out what God has to say about your particular situation or question in Scripture. One of my favorites is John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that He gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” Now that’s a truth worth believing in!

God’s best!
