Have you ever asked God where in the world am I heading? I asked God that question when I was recently rewiring an old jeep. I looked at the bundle of wires, hoping I could connect them where they needed to go! But for them to work, they obviously had to have a source of power first before finding their final end. As I thought about that I couldn’t help but remember some words from King Solomon in Proverbs 3:6 (KJV), “In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”

Sometimes we get started in a certain direction and suddenly we find ourselves in a detour going who knows where! We don’t recall deciding anything or circumstances dictating a sudden turn, but none-the-less we find ourselves operating in different roles or plodding along strange paths than we initially imagined. Or perhaps, you too have had a day like no other and end up asking God – what are you doing?

When things seem disconnected, we must remember that as believers in Jesus Christ, we can trust the “source” to guide us. As the apostle Paul told the Philippians: “For it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.” (2:13 ESV). Then Paul went on to say, “Do all things without grumbling or disputing.” I’m sure that you don’t have this challenge, but I must admit I can say I’m not always good about not grumbling!

But I’m encouraged when I realize that God is the one working in my heart to stir up desires that enable me to “will and work” for the good of God’s kingdom no matter where my path leads. So don’t get discouraged when you find yourself on a detour…just get ready for some godly adventure! God just may be setting you up for some divine encounters that demand a detour.

God’s best to you,
Marshall
